What funders actually check in a grant budget

  • The math. Reviewers add your columns. A budget that doesn't total the amount requested is the fastest way to lose points on a compliance screen.
  • Unit reasoning. "Supplies: $4,000" scores worse than "80 participants × $50 in workbooks."
  • Allowable indirect costs. Federal grants generally permit the 10% de minimis rate under 2 CFR 200.414; many private foundations cap indirect at 10–15% or disallow it.
  • Match and in-kind. If the RFP requires a match, show the source and whether it's committed or pending.
  • Narrative alignment. Every budget line should map to an activity described in the proposal.
