Draft Nonprofit Grants Inside Claude — GrantDraft Is Now an MCP Connector

If you already use Claude or ChatGPT to think through your grant strategy, you've probably hit the same wall we did: the assistant can brainstorm, but it can't touch your actual proposals. You copy the RFP in, copy the draft out, paste it into a doc, lose the thread when you switch tabs.

Today that changes. GrantDraft is now available as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) connector, which means Claude, ChatGPT, and any other MCP-compatible AI client can read and write your GrantDraft proposals directly — as you, with your account, respecting your data.

What you can do from inside Claude or ChatGPT

Once you connect GrantDraft (60-second OAuth flow, same login you already use), the assistant gains seven tools:

• list_grants — see every proposal in your GrantDraft account
• create_grant — start a new draft from a funder name, RFP paste, and deadline
• generate_section — draft any section (needs statement, goals, evaluation, budget narrative, sustainability, etc.) using your org profile + the funder's RFP as context
• critique_section — get a program-officer-style score (1–5 on alignment, specificity, clarity, compliance, readiness) plus the top 3 fixes
• grant_writing_guide — structural guidance for any of the nine standard proposal sections
• find_grant_sources — curated list of free funder-research databases (Candid, Instrumentl, Grants.gov, and more)
• critique_draft_section — paste any draft (no account needed) and get a rubric review

What this looks like in practice

A real workflow from a Head Start director we work with, on a Tuesday morning:

She types in Claude: "The Ballmer Group just posted a new early-learning RFP — here's the text. Create a GrantDraft proposal for it targeting $150K, then draft the needs statement using our 2024 intake data."

Claude calls create_grant, then generate_section with section: "need_statement". It comes back with a first-pass draft grounded in her org profile and the funder's priorities, plus a link to open it in GrantDraft.

She replies: "Now critique it as if you were the program officer."

Claude calls critique_section. She gets: Alignment 4/5, Specificity 2/5 — cite Marion County ACS data for the food-insecurity claim. Top fix: replace "many families" with the actual number.

Total elapsed time: about six minutes. She never left the chat window.

Why MCP instead of a "ChatGPT plugin"

MCP is an open standard from Anthropic that Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, and a growing list of clients all speak. One connector = every AI tool. When your next AI client of choice launches, GrantDraft already works with it. No re-integration.

Is my data safe?

Yes — this is the part that matters:

• You authenticate through OAuth, the same standard used to "Sign in with Google." You're not pasting API keys anywhere.
• Every tool call runs as you. Row-level security in our database means the AI client can only see and change data that belongs to your account. There is no shared token, no admin access.
• You can revoke access anytime from your GrantDraft account settings.
• The AI provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.) never sees your login credentials — only a scoped access token, and only for the calls you approve.

How to set it up (60 seconds)

Claude Desktop

1. Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Connectors.
2. Click Add custom connector.
3. Paste: https://getgrantdraft.com/mcp
4. Click through the OAuth flow — sign in to GrantDraft, approve access.
5. You're done. Ask Claude "what tools does GrantDraft have?" to confirm.

ChatGPT (Pro / Team / Enterprise)

1. Open ChatGPT → Settings → Connectors → Add.
2. Paste: https://getgrantdraft.com/mcp
3. Sign in and approve.

Cursor, Codex, or another MCP client

Add an HTTP MCP server pointing at https://getgrantdraft.com/mcp. OAuth is auto-discovered.
